Sulcatas are clearly adapted to extreme heat, but less well known is how well they withstand cold temperatures. However, like most arid tortoises, they seem better suited than many other turtle and tortoise species to temperature variations. They walk slowly and graze during the cooler sections of the day. From the plants that they consume, they get the water that they need. Water in their habitat is scarce, and what wild spur thighs do on the rare occasions they find water is not known. The Sulcata tortoises do not seem to drink water at the Zoo, and show very little water interest. This means that they are receiving all the water from their diet that they need.
